Lighting: Shady AF

Back when I was in high school I was all about car stereo systems. To this day I thoroughly appreciate a quality sound system. Getting good speakers that can clearly perform highs, meds and lows is crucial. However, if you have done any sort of speaker shopping you have come across absolutely absurd claims of wattage.

Companies will sell speakers, for example a round 5 1/4 inch speaker, and they will say it’s a 500 W speaker. And yet if you come across a high-end name brand version of that product you will probably max out at 100 W. The same kind of shady misrepresentation and downright false marketing plagues the lighting industry today.

For starters, there isn’t any actual governing body that regulates what you can say about your lights. Even on the packaging and labeling on the product itself you’ll see absurd claims like 1200 W. And yet if you go to the actual company website they will tell you it’s far from the truth. Here is an example.

Here they disclose that their “1200w” light consumes 255w, it’s absolutely absurd. (I would bet that the 255w isn’t even accurate either!)

Why would they choose such inaccurate numbers?

It’s a sales technique folks.

Most consumers out there just look at a number and take it as the gods honest truth. What you don’t know is that lighting (and not that it matters, but speaker companies as well) have been getting away with this dishonest marketing and sales since the beginning of time.

No shade, but you see this most often when you come across generic looking lights or companies often based out of China.

The bottom line is, if it seems too good to be true (a 1000w light the same cost as a 100w light) then it is.

We can’t overstate this enough, the quality of light and the actual Umol/wattage that the light puts out has the greatest impact on the success of your plant.

It’s basically like finding a hiker on the Appalachian trail who needs 10,000 cal to make it to the finish and they buy a 10,000 cal sandwich only to be handed a 50 cal pickle.  That hiker isn’t getting very far.

Hopefully you’re not standing there with your droopy, leggy cannabis plants holding a pickle.
